Also a part of this program is the Smoke-free Illinois Act. Effective January 1, 2008, the Smoke-free Illinois Act prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, including offices, theaters, museums, libraries, educational institutions, schools, commercial establishments, enclosed shopping centers and retail stores, restaurants, bars, private clubs and gaming facilities.

A technician employed by the Health Department conducts vision and hearing screenings. Vision screenings are done for preschool, kindergarten, grades 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, teacher referrals and special education. Hearing screenings are done for preschool, kindergarten, grades 1, 2, 3, teacher referrals and special education. Children identified as having possible hearing or vision problems are referred to medical professionals for further testing and treatment.
