GIS (geographic information systems), is a computer system capable of storing, manipulating, assembling and displaying geographically referenced information. If you’re having trouble picturing what that means, think back to the overhead projectors you may have used in school, with their clear plastic sheets and dry erase markers. Imagine being able to draw all of the streets of a city on one sheet, all of the houses on another, all of the fire hydrants on a third, all of the businesses on a fourth, and so on. Now imagine what you could learn by overlaying those sheets on top of each other, how quickly you could make new maps by just changing which sheets were being displayed. Now imagine what you could do if you could have a book of information attached to each of those sheets, detailing what everything drawn on it meant, and you could cross reference all of those books just by tapping your finger on the map. And all of this can be updated quickly when new information arrives. That’s the power of GIS, and it’s here to help you.

Here at Montgomery County, our GIS office maintains parcel boundary lines and related data; maps information across time like municipal annexations and right-of-way vacations; gathers information from historical maps both for preservation, verification, and analysis with new developments; assists other departments in creating and maintaining maps for their use ie… Montgomery County EMA disaster relief shelters, economic development enterprise zones, historic tornado maps, etc; and much more.

Maps are available to the public for a reasonable fee. (Sorry, but printer ink is expensive, and three-foot-wide printers aren’t exactly cheap, either!)

If you are interested in obtaining any of these maps, they are available for a reasonable fee at the Montgomery County GIS office, 3rd Floor, at the Old Courthouse.
